Optimisation of Submerged Arc Welding Process using Response Surface Methodology

Abstract


Submerged arc welding is a popular method for welding of steels in industry. In the present work, weld bead width and weld bead hardness of submerged arc welded joints of mild steel plates have been optimized using Response Surface Methodology. Experimentation has been conducted using L15 orthogonal array with Box-Behnken design where welding current (A), arc voltage (V) and welding speed (m/min) are considered as variable process parameters. Optimised input parameter setting for maximum weld bead hardness and weld bead width are welding current =250 A, Arc Voltage =30V and welding speed = 1.2 m/min respectively. Accuracy of the optimization results is acceptable as it indicates less than 5% error in case of weld bead width and less than 2% in case of weld bead hardness during experimental validation.
